I’m a Rocker Singer. I remember those days as if they were yesterday. When my children and grandchildren were babies, I treasured the times I spent rocking them to sleep, singing soft lullabies that lulled them into baby dreamland. Oh, the sweet bliss!

I vividly recall how I felt when I sang over them, breathing in their sweet baby heavenly scent, caressing their soft skin and hair, and swaddling them close. As their little sleepy eyes looked up into my eyes, so often tears of joy would trickle down my cheeks. I would think, “God, how could I be so blessed with these moments, with these miracles?”

My heart felt overwhelmed. Such joy and unfathomable love I had for those tiny and new beings. How could I delight that much over someone who couldn’t do anything for themselves, much less for me?
But, here’s the REAL “rocker” moment. God loves those moments with you and me. Zephaniah 3:17 says “”For the LORD your God is living among you. He is a mighty Savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With His love, He will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”

Reading that scripture yesterday, brought back all those sweet “rocking” memories, and helped give new meaning to how much God loves His children. God sings because He rejoices over His children, delights in them, and feels joy over them. He loves us each so much that He sings melodies of love and rejoices over us. This delight is simply because we are His. And just as a mama’s voice calms and soothes her child with song, God quiets us with His love and soothes our hearts with His voice.

Sometimes it’s hard to understand how God could love us, especially when we consider all the mistakes and times of disappointment we’ve struggled through. Or, when we feel like we don’t measure up because we don’t love Him enough in return. Or when we feel unloved or rejected by others and wonder if God might have abandoned or rejected us as well. What comfort it brings to think about God loving us the same way a mother loves her babies.

As moms and grand moms, we sing over our babies because we love them, not because they deserve it or can do anything for us in return. They bring delight to our hearts, because they are ours. And the same goes for our Heavenly Father when it comes to His own. God was singing over us before we ever spoke a word.

Cory Asbury’s song, “Reckless Love”, explains that love so well:
“Before I spoke a word, You were singing over me
You have been so, so good to me
Before I took a breath, You breathed Your life in me
You have been so, so kind to me

Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God
Oh, it chases me down, fights ’til I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine
I couldn’t earn it, and I don’t deserve it, still, You give Yourself away
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God.”

Not exactly.
