Throwing that question out, might make you wonder what I mean. You might think I\u2019m asking about putting on your clothes, your glasses, your deodorant, your cologne or aftershave, your jewelry or shoes or hat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This blog today was inspired by a dear friend who is one of my faithful daily blog followers. Not only do they cheer me on with encouragement, but they often give me advice about what to write about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few weeks ago, their pastor spoke about Titus 2:10: \u201cadorning the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect.\u201d In other words, make a daily habit of putting on God! I often talk about God with us and God in us, but I hadn\u2019t thought about \u201cputting God ON us\u201d!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The word \u201cadorning\u201d took me by surprise. Adorning sounds like decorating a Christmas tree or, like the mannequins at the Family Center\u2019s thrift store where I volunteer, it could mean adding a scarf or hat or jewelry to the dress we put on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I don\u2019t really know the direction my friend\u2019s pastor went with his sermon on \u201cadorning the doctrine of God\u201d, but I started thinking about what I want to put on that might cause me to be \u201cadorned\u201d with the beauty of God (His character). What would that look like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I\u2019ll be getting ready for church in a few minutes. What I\u2019ll wear in clothing is laid out, including my jewelry and shoes. I\u2019ll be putting on my makeup and spraying on a little cologne. But mostly, I am going to \u201cadorn\u201d myself with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
St. Paul told us how best we should clothe ourselves for everyday living. He encourages us to clothe ourselves with five distinct attributes of Christ. So, if we\u2019re asked: \u201cAre you dressed yet?\u201d \u2013 these are the clothes that matter, regardless of how we\u2019re stylin\u2019 or what \u201cthreads\u201d we have on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Colossians 8:12 says: \u201cTherefore, as God\u2019s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.\u201d We are His children and being God-like and Christ-like, we\u2019ll want to be \u201cchips off the ole\u2019 block\u201d and be \u201cadorned\u201d like Him with that same clothing:
** Compassion is a way of living that reaches others with the hands and feet of Christ in very practical and loving ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
** Kindness can be an encouraging word to a friend or a gesture that says, \u201cI see you. You matter.\u201d Kindness is a way of living that finds such great pleasure in making others feel cared about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
** Humility is the epitome of selflessness. It is a way of living that looks to others first, because they genuinely care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
** Gentleness is a way of living that expresses quiet, peaceful and calmness in our approach with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
** Patience is a calm, peaceful endurance. It is a way of living that accepts God\u2019s timing as perfect timing, trusting Him Who holds all things in His hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, may we put God on by \u201cadorning\u201d ourselves with His love, His character, His many qualities of His compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Then EVERYDAY we\u2019ll be able to say: \u201cI\u2019m adorned with God today!”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
