I am watching each one come into their own desires for their future. Of course, my sons would hope their boys wanted to follow in their “business” footsteps, but so far, each of those sons are choosing their own way.

It isn’t because those boys don’t value and appreciate their fathers’ business success. It is just their “bent” is toward other areas of interest. That’s okay! No doubt, they will be as successful as their dads except in other ways.

But another Father/Son relationship came to my mind when I was impressed to write this blog. Remember when Jesus was 12 years old and He was already doing His Father’s “business” — not Joseph’s carpentry business, but his Heavenly Father’s business.

The Father’s business spoken of in Luke 2:49 by Jesus was His response when his parents asked why He would, at the young age of 12 years old, NOT stick with them on their journey home. He said to His parents: “Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”

Jesus’ parents were evidently a little fuzzy about His mission, but He wasn’t confused at all. He was clear and already compelled by it.

As I read those words, I wondered about us. If we followed the example of Jesus (WWJD), wouldn’t we realize that we MUST be about our Father’s business, too? And wouldn’t we desire to find out our Father’s moment-by-moment wisdom and direction?

If we are about our Father’s business, wouldn’t we say the words our Father is telling us to say and not one word more. Can a chatty, impulsive gal aka ME, just insert here a “MERCY!?”

I really do desire to do the things my Father is telling me to do – even as I write these blogs or encourage a friend or pray for a family member. I really do desire to do only those things my Father is telling me to do and not one iota more.

We can trust that God has us on His “payroll” as we daily do His business. Our Father’s business is a “mission” business. There are neighbors to love – to look into their eyes and SEE them and their needs and desire to do something about it. We have a Gospel to share. We have enemies to forgive. Our work is plentiful.

I like to plan my days around being about my Father’s business. People may ask “Why do you spend time with God and organize your calendar around Christ’s priorities for your life?” Very simply, the Lord owns everything: our life, our work, our family, our relationships, our ministry, our church, and our stuff.

Retirement isn’t an option for those employed by God in His enterprise to save souls and to teach His followers His ways of stopping to heal the broken, loving the unlovely, feeding the hungry and quenching the thirst of weary souls.

Maybe it’s time we stopped and put the Father’s Business Plan to action and see our Father’s business grow.

Thanks to the Apostle Paul for giving us our Father’s business MISSION statement” “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Won’t you join me in being about our Father’s business today? The rewards are worth it!

I have five grandsons. I am watching each one come into their own desires for their future.
