It’s been a roller coaster of triumphs and mishaps! I’ve been friends AND foes with my hair since an early age.

What about those perms??? I can still smell the chemical concoction from a home perm my mom gave me. She read the instructions like they were sacred scrolls, but the result was me going back to the fourth grade looking like a poodle!

And how about those early days that involved the now-extinct plastic cap and crochet hook method. I started that juncture at 26. My dishwater brown hair was sacrificed in the name of blonde ambition! Confession: To this day, I have been a loyal visitor to the six-to-eight-week hair coloring cycle — never missing an appointment with my roots.

But, last week, in the middle of my usual routine, my unsuspecting, sweet husband checked in to see how my hair appointment with me — was coming along. Distracted by our chat, I accidentally swapped the blonde shade for a darker shade.

And just like that — poof! I’m a brunette. It was a humbling reminder that control is overrated. But, thankfully, my hair is lightening up a bit — after many washings! Now, I laugh about those imperfect moments – and I even find a blog in them! “All things (really do) work together for good to those who love God……” (Romans 8:28)

Really, my hair ‘woes’ are just a lighthearted tale. My heart goes out to those bravely facing far greater challenges, like losing their hair during cancer treatments. Your courage and beauty shine far brighter than any shade of blonde or brunette. You are so loved and respected.

Our hair, and our lives, don’t always turn out the way we plan! Often, I mess up with way more than a coloring or perm job (or any other trivial moments), but God sees way beyond my/our oops or crisis moments. What matters to Him, is what’s on the inside of us!

Whether our hair is a crown of glory, a reason for tears, or somewhere in between, may we be reminded of God’s loving handiwork. He made us uniquely and with enough grace to handle the bad-hair days or any other days that seem overwhelming.

Let’s remember who we are to our Heavenly Father. We are His children. Beautiful. Called. Named. Beloved. Worth so much more than we can imagine.

Our Father continues to help us find ways to keep learning, growing, repairing, repenting AND becoming more like Him every day! Isn’t that reason enough to adjust our crown?

“To bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” Isaiah 61:3

Oh, the lifelong journey I have had with my hair!
