As most know, we live in a 60+ Active Adult Community. That’s the way it’s advertised. And truthfully, most of us are active — playing pickleball, ping pong, Mahjong, working out in the fitness room, going for long walks around our community and even around the Texas Children’s Hospital next door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet sometimes we\u2019re so caught up in our hustle that we zoom past neighbors who might be taking things a little slower. I was in full speed mode when a dear friend, using her walker, was moving slower than usual. My first instinct was to pass her by, then, out of the blue, God gives me His unmistakable nudge \u2013 to slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I put on the brakes and asked how she\u2019s doing. She is quick to share her lengthy crash-bang-fall story. One minute, she was just trying to fix her shower mat; the next, she was down for over an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not only did she end up with a bruised body, but her family\u2019s scolding for trying to maneuver a somersault, stung her even more. I paused to pray for her healing and wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We made it to her apartment, and no sooner than I carry on toward my place, a man came out of his apartment with his dog, and I stop to speak to him. He commences to tell me about his recent knee surgery. Another nudge from God for me to stop to listen to his story and pray for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Oh, Heaven Central had my attention and my number that day. God\u2019s message came in loud and clear. If I am to be God\u2019s hands extended, then I\u2019d better take off my roller skates (figuratively speaking) and slow down — to be a friend who sincerely cares. After all, each one I encounter deserves my undivided attention.
Matthew 7:12 echoes, \u201cDo unto others as you would have them do unto you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My challenge to all of us is simple: let\u2019s trade our figurative roller skates for a few moments of tangible love and real connection. Whether we\u2019re zipping around on foot, using a walker, riding an electric vehicle, or in a wheelchair, every pace counts. Let\u2019s make time to share a laugh, a prayer, or even just a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Won’t you join me in slowing down to keep up with God and the divine appointments He sets up for those who need a friend. Someday that may be us who longs for a patient and loving friend.
