It\u2019s no secret that I\u2019ve been a fan of the show, \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d for 23 years \u2013 that\u2019s how long it\u2019s been on air. I\u2019ll admit I get choked up sometimes when I see and hear someone who sings straight from a heart of gratitude and talent! So last Sunday night\u2019s performance by this young man, 17-year-old Canaan Hill, set me reeling again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was an incredible moment when Canaan, an aspiring preacher from Dallas, Texas, (my home town) stood on the “American Idol” stage and did what he knows best — glorifying God through his gift of singing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hill, who graduated high school early to focus on his calling, humbly shared with the judges that he was preparing to go into preaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When he sang the powerful gospel song “I Need Your Glory” by Earnest Pugh, it was more than just a performance — it was an anointed moment that moved the judges deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Judge Lionel Richie, clearly stirred by the young man\u2019s voice and spirit, placed a hand on Hill\u2019s shoulder, and said, “That was powerful.” Canaan’s heartfelt response was: “To God be the glory.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Judge Carrie Underwood (who won the title back in 2005) called his singing “smooth and powerful,” comparing his voice to “velvet” and “butter.” Even Judge Luke Bryan, known for his country roots, couldn\u2019t help but wonder if people at Hill\u2019s church just “run to the baptism pit and jump in it” when he sings. LOL!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The judges didn\u2019t just hand him a golden ticket to Hollywood — they presented him with a platinum ticket, a rare honor that allows him to bypass the first round of competition. Richie, clearly inspired, joked about starting a church with Hill that very night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Canaan Hill\u2019s response to the recognition was consistent throughout — giving all the glory to God. His humble spirit and passionate faith are a reminder that when we use our gifts for God\u2019s glory, He makes room for us. “A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.” (Proverbs 18:16)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let\u2019s celebrate this young man — not just for his talent but for his unwavering commitment to glorifying the Lord. In a world where fame can so easily turn heads and hearts away from God, Canaan\u2019s focus on his calling is a beautiful testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe we don’t have that kind of talent, but we DO have lights shining BIG within us — straight from our Creator. Let’s pray that Canaan Hill’s future is bright as he sheds his light. AND, let’s pray that we are so bold that we, too, become those who declare……”TO GOD BE THE GLORY!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
