And yes — I was a CB-er!

My handle? “Honeybee.” I’d buzz across the airwaves and say to a trucker, “You’ve got that one, Honeybee. How’s it look over your shoulder?”

Back then, long road trips had a charm all their own. No cell phones. No GPS. No Waze. Just paper maps that never folded back the right way, a thermos of coffee, and a CB radio buzzing with chatter.

Truckers became our eyes and ears on the road, warning us of accidents, weather, or the occasional “Smokey Bear” (police officer with radar). Sometimes their conversations were so funny I’d laugh until I was wide awake — better than caffeine! There was a camaraderie in those voices. Even though we never met, I felt less alone mile after mile.

Fast forward to today — my CB handle is retired, but now I have Waze. That app cheerfully reroutes me when roadblocks pop up, helping me get where I need to go.

But in a way, it doesn’t hold a candle to the “way we were.” There was something personal about hearing another human voice warn you, encourage you, or keep you company in the dark stretches of the highway.

And isn’t that exactly like our Heavenly Father? He whispers to us: “Do you hear Me? Got your ears on?” Because He loves us, He speaks — sometimes through scripture, a song, a sermon, a providential encounter, or even that still, small voice inside. Like any good parent, God warns us, guides us, and keeps us from danger, if only we’ll listen.

Deuteronomy 28:1-12 says, “If you fully obey the Lord your God… all these blessings will come upon you.” Blessings are linked to listening.

So my prayer is this: Lord, thank You for speaking. Keep me close enough to hear Your voice clearly, and quick enough to obey without hesitation.

And to that I say a big “10-4.” Yes, Lord — I’ve got my ears on.

Until next time, friends — “I’ll catch ya on the flip-flop!”

God still speaks today — guiding, warning, blessing. The key is keeping our ears tuned to His voice.

“Got a copy?” “How do you read me?” “Got your ears on?” If you were around in the 70s or 80s, you’ll recognize those words as good old CB (Citizens Band) radio talk.
