We\u2019re back home in Austin after a few glorious days at Epiphany Ranch in Alto, Texas \u2014 62 acres of lush East Texas beauty. Tall trees. Rolling fields. A sparkling lake. Tiny homes tucked like little jewels across the land. A place where people come for counseling, training, encouragement, and sometimes just to catch their breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carl and I had the joy of helping get things ready for a couples\u2019 retreat. Boots on the ground, hands to the work \u2014 the kind of effort that leaves you tired but grateful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But one of my favorite moments happened on the porch of the lodge during a podcast with my daughter, Staci.

Larry was busy elsewhere, so I slipped into the guest chair. We sat on that porch talking about life, faith, and \u2014 of all things \u2014 Sago Palms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They had planned to plant these beautiful palms in large pots around the property. Lovely plants, really. Tropical. Elegant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that night Staci couldn\u2019t stop thinking about them. She even woke up in the middle of the night with the thought circling her mind.

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came that gentle nudge we learn to recognize over time \u2014 the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit. Sago Palms are highly toxic to humans and animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And suddenly the picture changed. Those spiky palms would grow right at the height of little children playing nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beautiful plant? Yes.
Good idea? No.
So the plan came to a screeching halt!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Holy Spirit had whispered wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later Staci asked me, \u201cMom, what do you think about that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My answer came quickly: \u201cGoodness gracious \u2014 I don\u2019t want my future great-grandbabies running into a plant that could hurt them!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes God speaks through thunder. But most of the time He speaks through whispers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSeek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.\u201d (Matthew 7:7)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the way I try to write each day \u2014 listening for heaven\u2019s download. A story. A lesson. A moment God might use to encourage someone taking their next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we slow down\u2026
If we listen\u2026
If we surrender\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God will guide us \u2014 even about something as simple as a plant on a porch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I\u2019ve learned something very important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
