A Little Dab’ll Do Ya
Baby Boomer peers!! Remember the Brylcreem men’s hair product commercials? It was advertised on television with the jingle, “Brylcreem — A Little Dab’ll Do Ya! Brylcreem — You’ll look so debonair. Brylcreem — The gals’ll all pursue ya; they’ll love to run their fingers through your hair!”.
And therein lies my blog for today! LOL! I’m talking about “a little dab of faith” is all we need for mountains to be moved. “Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20-21.
I read Elisha’s words to the widow who was about to be penniless. Elisha asks “What can I do to help you? Tell me what do you have in the house? And she replied, “Nothing at all, except a flask of olive oil.” (2 Kings 4:2) But that little dab of oil changed everything about her circumstances.
I’ll admit there were seasons when I wondered “Now what?” Just like the widow talking to Elisha, I felt powerless to change my circumstances. The diagnosis of my husband’s illness was not good. His ability to work had ended abruptly. Our financial status grew worse. And a few months later, he passed on.
God was with me very step of the way, but I was spiritually and physically tired of the overwhelming changes of my husband’s passing, making ends meet, having physical issues, and selling our large home.
The widow in 2 Kings understood a season like mine. She faced a season of loss when her husband died. Waking up every day, she felt alone and abandoned in her circumstances. Hers was a season of emptiness. She was a single mother trying to raise her children without enough income to provide.
But…Elisha! But…God! Her troubles were lack of income. Her blessing, a little bit of oil. We, too, have blessings in our season of “Now what?” We look at our little dab and think it’s not enough.
But God looks at our little dab and says, “It’s plenty. Watch what I will do with it.” With a little dab of faith, the widow poured and poured and poured, until, in 2 Kings 4:5-6, every jug was filled.
God knew the exact amount of oil the widow needed to cancel her debts. He took her little bit of oil and used it to not only change the course of her life, but the lives of her children.
And the same for me. I stopped looking at what I didn’t have and looked at the “many blessings” that I did have! I had: a little dab of hope, a little dab of joy, and a little dab of energy.
In our season of “Now what?”, God knows exactly what we need. He will take whatever small amount we have and multiply it to be exactly what we lack.
The only thing we must do is offer ourselves as empty jugs, allowing God to pour into us what we need during this season. He will use our little dab of faith to produce more faith. He will take our little dab of hope to develop trust. Our little dab of joy will bring lots of laughter. And that little dab of energy will help us accomplish much. After all, little is much when God is in it!
