Is the Light Shining in YOUR Corner?

Is the Light Shining in YOUR Corner?

As I began to catch my thoughts for today’s blog that I was certain it would be about our lights shining, I remembered this little song: “Brighten the corner where you are / Brighten the corner where you are / Someone far from harbor YOU may guide across the bar / Brighten the corner where you are!”

I remember singing the song in Sunday School. At the time I doubt any of us children knew what a harbor was much less what it meant to guide someone across the bar. But, now as an adult, in my little corner of the world, I have learned the song’s meaning. We may not be meant to light up the whole world, but we can be a bright shining light right where we are — in our corner. It just may be that our light will light up someone else’s life with peace, joy, and love on this side of heaven and help take them across the bar to heaven one day where there will be light forevermore.

This year, on May 13th, it will have been 40 days that Jesus would have been in and out of places on this earth after His resurrection. That 40th day – He ascended to heaven with the words to His disciples: “Go into all the world and preach the good news…..” (Mark 16:15). And, today, the baton has been passed onto His modern day disciples – you and me. Many have taken those directions and gone to third world countries to proclaim the good news, many have become evangelists and helped win the lost daily. But others are everyday folks like you and me who have received those directions too. Sometimes we may feel like there are just too many causes to help and that our effort or contribution won’t make a difference but it’s not true. Even a little “light” through a word spoken, an act of love given, a friendly nod or a little vignette that someone sees will be the LIGHT they need. As Mother Teresa said, “If you can’t feed one hundred, at least feed just one. It will make a difference to that one.”

So, in my new little corner of this world, the folks here know – from my blog and from putting a spotlight on Jesus in my little corner – that it is HE who I wish to make famous. Famous enough, that I hope that others are drawn to His love, mercy, and grace. I get to do that at my front door on the little shelf lit up with my apartment number. Last month, I pointed to Easter through my little bunnies and floral cross. Now, I have displayed my little Noah’s Ark (plus the cross) AND, at a 40% off Spring items at Hobby Lobby, I found this door mat. “God bless this home and all who enter.” That is my prayer.

I needed help with hanging a heavy mirror, so I knocked on my neighbors’ door. It was my blessing that the husband was home. He was gracious to help me. Now I have a well-hung mirror in my entry way. My neighbor pointed to my new door mat and said, “I see your door mat every day and I wanted to come in for a blessing.” And I replied, “And, your desire was fulfilled. You came in and now you are blessed.”

I reached one by my little light and based upon what I saw on the little pedestal at his door (pictured here), their little corner has a spotlight on Jesus too! Keep lighting us up, Lord!
