It Happens on this Day
May 6th was on my mind. I checked my calendar – nada, nothing showing except for me working at the family center all day and serving communion at church on Saturday night.
There must be something else because I keep thinking I need to blog about whatever it may be. Still nothing.
So, I googled May 6th. The following events took place on this day (plus more that included many famous people born on this day). I hand-selected these few events:
2004 — The final episode of the television sitcom FRIENDS aired and was watched by more than 52 million viewers.
2002 — South African-born American entrepreneur Elon Musk founded the aerospace company SpaceX which helped usher in the era of commercial spaceflight.
1998 – Steve Jobs introduced Apple’s first iMac, a personal computer that became hugely successful and helped revive the struggling company.
1957 — The last episode of “I Love Lucy” aired; the hugely popular show, which starred Lucille Ball, was considered one of TV’s landmark sitcoms.
1954 – Roger Bannister of Britain became the first athlete to run a mile in less than four minutes.
1915 – American baseball player Babe Ruth hit his first major league home run; he finished his career with 714 homers, a record that stood until 1974.
Interesting events to remember. I’ve heard many public speakers talk about Roger Bannister’s 4-minute mile, declaring records are meant to be broken. As of April, 2021, the “four-minute barrier” was broken by 1,664 athletes.
As interesting as it was for me to find this trivia for this date, I still felt like something else would be happening today and I am hankering to find out what it may be!
As I type this blog, I realize I might be wasting brain energy trying to remember, but I refuse to throw in the towel about this day. So, I’ll just step up my game and remember what King David said in Psalm 118:24 – “This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Aw! Maybe that’s what I need to remember! Gratitude. Notice that scripture isn’t talking about tomorrow and what may happen tomorrow. The psalmist is putting an emphasis on THIS day! That reminds me of another scripture. “Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” (Matthew 6:34)
If we are concerning ourselves with this day or even future days, we are overthinking. That’s opposite to the point the psalmist was making “THIS is the Day” to focus on, to rejoice in whatever this day holds.
Remember when the disciples said to Jesus: “Lord, teach us to pray!” And Jesus gave them the template for all our prayers. “Our Father…..Give us THIS DAY our daily bread.” He didn’t say “give us today and next month’s bread.” This DAY! Can we trust Him for today’s faith – today’s daily bread?
Each day is a blessing from God. He has blessed us with a new day to live it to the fullest, doing the necessary tasks for this day, loving, and helping one another and discovering new things about life and ourselves.
Being present with God Who gives us wisdom for today, may be the game changer we need for what tomorrow holds.
Thank You, Lord, for this day – for good health, for family and friends, for love of life and blessings beyond measure. Whatever it was that I was trying to remember, I will REMEMBER the goodness of God and THIS day that He made for you and me!
P.S. I remembered with the help of my friend. It’s Voting Day! I’ll be stopping by to vote on my way to work! Oh, and it’s also the Coronation of King Charles III! You’re welcome!
