Let’s Hear it for the Girls

Let’s Hear it for the Girls

October 1, 2020 Off By Donna Wuerch Noble

Let’s hear it for the girls, starting with our first mother – Eve. Bless her heart! She had no girl friends to be her role models for wisdom and guidance. She wasn’t afforded the opportunity to say “yes” to God via the angel, Gabriel. I think she has gotten a bad rap. Sure, she made a whopping mistake, but if it weren’t for her mistake, we wouldn’t be here. Even back then, God had a plan and promised “All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purposes” Romans 8:28. Her failures, and her husband’s, afforded the human race a place on this earth.

Let’s hear it for the girls. Fast forward to Mary, Mother of Jesus – the new and improved Eve. This time, Gabriel showed up and gave her the opportunity to say “yes” to bearing the Son of God in the flesh. Her “yes” gave us a spiritual new life through her Son. And, her response to Gabriel that she would become the mother of God’s Son are what is driving Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s cynics crazy: “Behold the HANDMAID of the Lord; be it unto me according to Your word” (Luke 1:38). Like those words somehow make her weak and a mistreated vessel. Not! Mary was and still is our perfect role model — one of obedience, gentleness, patience, commitment, self-sacrificing love and devotion, lover of God, holiness, strength, servitude.

Now, let’s hear it for the girls of these times. We’ve come a long way, Sisters! I won’t relegate to who we are not (i.e., the left’s women status symbols), but who we are as devoted followers of Christ and His Word. And I bring you to President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Amy Coney Barrett. I sincerely believe that this is a Queen Esther moment: “God has called you to this kingdom – for such a time as this.” Judge Barrett’s professional life is impeccable and unparalleled in intellect and achievement with credentials that are sterling. She is proof that women can be ambitious maternally as they are professionally.

I watched Judge Barrett, last Saturday, as she was introduced to the world. It occurred to me that, in a world of venom, she is quietly confident. Amidst the shouts to bring her down, she speaks of duty. Surrounded by words of slander, she allows her life to be her defense. She lives her opinions. If Christians will pay attention to her, we will have an example for our own lives as we brave this final month of October before the election. I’m praying that I will stand with the same quiet confidence of this woman who knows and trusts Christ. I pray that she will continue to set that example for our country. She will need great strength to live her faith out this October. What she says and how she says it will be taped, run as news, and will remain her witness for years to come. How like God to quietly orchestrate an October 2020 example for our country. Quiet confidence is a powerful witness.

Our future doesn’t depend on a presidential election—although I believe we all have a responsibility to vote. God is still in control. As a Christian, I feel called to pray for Judge Barrett and my own witness this month. Won’t you join me?
