The Government is on HIS Shoulders
My husband was reading his cousin’s Christmas newsletter to me. It included the scripture: “And the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
That scripture struck a cord with me. We have had enough drama in our government to last us a lifetime. I’m pretty sure in many of our homes at Thanksgiving, the conversation about our Country’s government and its future came up!
I’ve been pondering, “the government shall be upon His shoulders”. Isn’t it amazing how words we’ve read a thousand times take on new meaning in different situations? God’s Word truly IS living! The Word Who became flesh and dwelt among us is the same Lord of history and our future.
“The government shall be upon his shoulder”, is a statement that carries not just weight but assurance. Our Messiah, Jesus Christ, is our ultimate leader, the One who governs with justice, peace, and perfect love. Now that’s leadership we can truly rest in!
We can feel overwhelmed when we think about earthly governments. But Isaiah reminds us that no matter how chaotic it gets, Jesus’ big shoulders carry the responsibility of leadership with strength and grace. He holds the universe together with His wisdom and power.
No matter who our leaders are, one thing is undeniable: earthly leaders, no matter their strengths or weaknesses, cannot bear the weight of governing alone. Only our Lord’s shoulders are broad enough to carry what no human can.
As citizens, we do our part to vote, support, and pray for those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1-2). But our ultimate hope doesn’t rest in the White House, Congress, or any other institution. It rests in the One who wears the title of “Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
May we remind ourselves that Jesus rules a kingdom that will never fail. And as we navigate this Christmas season, let’s celebrate the King who shoulders it all—and still invites us to cast our burdens on Him.
Now that’s a government I can wholeheartedly trust! What about you?
