Who is YOUR Coach?

Who is YOUR Coach?

Congrats to the Kansas City Chiefs on their Super Bowl win! And, “maybe next year” are the words we say about “our” teams. I still have everlasting hope for my Cowboys!

I know little about what it takes to win a championship, but I like to think that those who honor God and appreciate His favor on their lives are the ones who tend to be the big winners. I understand that both quarterbacks of this year’s Super Bowl teams are upstanding believers and aren’t ashamed to talk about it.

Chiefs’ quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, said: “God is at the center of it all. I know that I am here for a reason, to glorify Him. It means everything, not only about my football career, but all the decisions that I’ve made.”

Eagles’ quarterback, Jalen Hurts, said: “I’ve realized that God is everything and He’s worthy of praise. You have to put Him in the center of everything that you do. And I know God has been there the whole entire way.”

While the players get the limelight, there was one position that had more impact than any other. He never caught a pass, made a tackle, or scored a point to win that game. The ultimate outcome depended on the coach! For the Chiefs, the coach is Andy Reid.

For any game, it is the coach’s responsibility to guide what happens on the field. He instructs, sets the strategy, makes important decisions, corrects the team when needed and adjusts his players when they’re not doing their job on the field.

The coach is the team’s motivator! When a team falls behind, the coach instills the confidence to come back and win. When the team is ahead, he keeps them focused to maintain the winning momentum. A good coach inspires and encourages his team.

Thankfully, the coach has assistants that help him. Some teams have an offensive coordinator, a defensive coordinator, a line coach, a secondary coach, and assistants to the assistants! The whole team benefits when a head coach has a good staff of coaches with him.

I can’t imagine a successful football team without a coach, yet many people attempt to live their entire lives without listening to others who can instruct them, correct them, and motivate them.

The idea for this blog today came as I read Ryan Denison’s remarks about coaching. Thanks, Ryan, for the help! In essence, Ryan was an assistant to God (our Head Coach) in helping me with this blog.

God is our head coach Who calls the shots. He even wrote the playbook, and He instructs us on how to successfully execute each play. He shows us how to be good spouses, parents, grandparents, friends, employees and even a person of character and honor.

“Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end, you will be wise.” (Proverbs 19:20) When we listen and heed the instructions of our Heavenly “Coach”, we are guaranteed a victorious life.

Sometimes we are not necessarily doing something wrong, but we are not quite doing something as well as we can. God, our Heavenly Coach’s correction offers us solutions to “get back into the game” and to do better than we ever thought possible.

Like a coach, the Lord encourages and inspires us. He motivates us to rise above our circumstances and low expectations. Hearing and believing His words give us the confidence to overcome the obstacles that stand in our way.

God’s assistant coaches (i.e., a spouse, parent, friend, pastor, etc.) counsel, encourage, instruct, and provide wisdom to us. Personally, I want to thank all those assistant coaches who have encouraged, supported and guided me in this game of life.

Most of all – THANKS, GOD, for being my personal HOLY COACH Who continually amazes me when He whispers a new idea or a sweet word of love to me. Have you been in touch with YOUR Coach lately?

“I am God, YOUR God, Who teaches you how to live right and well. I show you what to do, where to go.” Isaiah 48:17
