And I Was Hungry and You Fed Me

Later in the afternoon on Day 3 of our Missions Trip, we were able to be a part of the “Firefly” Program where a truck is loaded with food to serve near the School of Champions — the area where there was a city dump where the children and adults would scavenge for food or items they could sell. The dump was moved, yet people have chosen to stay in that area. It was a sight to behold and we were so thankful we could play even a small role in not just giving out food, but have this scene indelibly imprinted in our hearts and minds.

What a shame it would be to come back home and forget about these precious people. That’s why we’re already on “mission” back at our homes……to continue to support what is being done to transform lives there. And here’s the thing — these are God’s children and He loves them all, but we must be His hands and heart extended. We are His messengers.

And, though their existence is mere, I watched some of the women sweeping their dirt floors. I could see they still had some pride in their flimsy, not water proof in any way, dwelling places. It would seem that these people have “settled” for this to be their “lot” in life, but thanks be to God for these beautiful volunteers who purposefully encourage, support, feed, and provide options for their children to eventually leave these circumstances and better their lives. Some of these children have gone on to finish school, college and are now transformed to a life of meaning and purpose.

It’s like the story of the starfish — we can’t help them all, but we can certainly make a difference one by one. That’s what God calls us to do — everyday — at home and in places where we can “save” a life!

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” Matthew 5:25
