Friends in High Places
Garth Brooks struck a chord with his hit, “I’ve Got Friends in Low Places.” The tune might be catchy, but the lyrics? Well, they paint a picture of drowning sorrows in whiskey and beer, hoping that’ll make everything okay. But let’s be honest — does that really sound like the company you’d want to keep? I think I’ll pass on that invite!
Yesterday, the idea of “low places” got me thinking. What kind of life are we really signing up for when we surround ourselves with negativity, bitterness, and a sense of hopelessness?
Hanging out in the pits of despair might offer temporary comfort, but it’s far from the life God intends for us. Why settle for the low when we can rise to the heights?
Now, don’t get me wrong — Jesus spent a lot of time with people in low places. But here’s the key: He didn’t stay there. He didn’t wallow in darkness and defeat with them. Instead, He reached into their low moments to pull them up, offering them a life of dignity and purpose — a life in high places.
Think about it: The Creator of the universe wants to be our friend! Jesus made this clear when He said to His disciples, “I no longer call you servants… I have called you friends.” (John 15:15)
This isn’t just about following orders; it’s about having an open, intimate relationship with God. As friends of Jesus, we’re given the privilege of hearing directly from Him, understanding God’s will and His plans for our lives.
What an incredible offer! Jesus says to us, “Let’s be friends.” He’s inviting us to walk with Him, to talk with Him, and to choose a life filled with joy, peace, and love. So why would we ever choose the low road of worry, anxiety, and fear when we’re called to live in the high places?
Today, my prayer is simple: “Lord, take me to higher and higher places!” And, that’s what this photo of my cousin, Myra Lewis, and me represents in the physical in New Mexico! Yes! Keep taking me higher — physically AND spiritually, dear Lord!
