From Spin Cycles to Soul Cycles

From Spin Cycles to Soul Cycles

OMG! I learn something new every day — and Sunday was no exception! I read a news piece that morning that was both surprising and strangely comforting: laundromats have a 90% success rate. Restaurants? About 30%. Retail stores? A humbling 20%.

And, amusing enough, there we were after church — with dear friends, enjoying our friendship sitting in the “Launderette”, which once was a South Austin wash-and-fold that has now been transformed into an upscale restaurant with cocktails, candles, and not a single lost sock in sight. Somewhere a dryer is weeping!

But as we enjoyed dinner in a building once dedicated to stain removal, I couldn’t help but think: maybe God is in the business of repurposing spaces — and souls — in ways that statistics can’t measure.

If someone had said years ago, “This place? Five stars someday?” most people would’ve laughed. “It’s a laundromat. Best-case scenario, the vending machine won’t eat my quarters.”

But God loves a glow-up. He specializes in taking ordinary, overlooked, or under-appreciated places — and people — and turning them into something beautiful, meaningful, even extraordinary.

And honestly? My life often feels like a laundry basket: a little wrinkled, a bit mixed-up, and occasionally in need of a second rinse. But if a humble laundromat can become a restaurant where people gather to celebrate, connect, and savor life, then God can work with the mismatched pile that is me. And you.

Statistics say laundromats succeed because people always need clean clothes. But spiritually speaking, people also need renewal. Grace. A fresh start. And that business? God is batting a perfect 100%.

So here’s the encouragement:
Don’t let the numbers scare you. Don’t let the odds convince you that what God called you to do is unrealistic. The world measures success by percentages; God measures it by purpose.

If He can turn a spin-cycle station into a chic dining experience, He can absolutely turn your “just getting by” season into something meaningful and life-giving.

Maybe you’re not failing—maybe you’re just being remodeled. Isaiah 43:19 — “See, I am doing a new thing!”

And who knows? Your greatest calling might be hidden in the very place the world thinks you’ll fold.
