Holy Thursday: When Love Bent Low

Holy Thursday: When Love Bent Low

April 17, 2025 Off By Donna Wuerch Noble

It was Thursday… but not just any Thursday.

The table was set, the room prepared, and the weight of what was to come hung heavy in the air. The disciples had no idea this meal would be called “The Last Supper”. They didn’t know this would be the night the Lamb of God would stoop low, take towel and basin, and wash the dust from their feet.

Jesus, the One who healed lepers and calmed storms, took on the posture of a servant. Not with fanfare or force. Just love. Lavish, lowly, undeserved love.

And there sat Judas.
Feet washed. Stomach filled. Heart divided.

How could he?
We ask that… but if we’re honest, we’ve had our Judas moments too. Times we walked away, tuned God out, or clung tighter to control than to Christ. Still — He washed our feet too. He loved us anyway.

Because that’s who He is.
The greatest became the least so we could be called redeemed.

On this Holy Thursday, we sit in the quiet before the chaos. The cross is coming — but not yet. Today is about the choice He made: to love fully, serve humbly, and obey completely.

He could’ve stopped it all. Called down angels. Walked away.
But instead, He stayed.
Because God so loved the world… (John 3:16).

Friend, may this day bring us to our knees — not in guilt, but in gratitude. He chose the towel before the crown. The basin before the throne. The cross before the resurrection.

Let’s not rush past this sacred pause.
Let’s remember that the King washed feet…
And tomorrow, He will bear nails.

We’ve heard it said, “Love is a verb.” Jesus showed us:
Love bends low.
Love doesn’t run.
Love gives it all.

And that is why Thursday matters. John 3:16 — “For God so loved…AND 1 John 3:16 “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.”
