It’s the Little Things That Matter Most

Lemon meringue pie was my husband’s favorite!

Yesterday, I woke with such a heart of thanksgiving for so many blessings in my life. Because it was my Honey’s birthday, I was especially grateful to have had 5 years of courtship (age 12 to 17), celebrating his birthdays, and 44 years of celebrating his birthday during our married years.

Ours was a match made in heaven, but my grandmother and our two mothers were heaven’s agents on earth. They literally prayed us together — even when, as kids, we had our spats. We’d “break-up” — to only come back together again and again, until we “bonded” in marriage. My grandmother and my mama are in heaven, but my Honey’s 91 years old Mom is still here. It wasn’t easy for her to see him suffer during those months of illness, and then bear the pain of him going to heaven before she did. But she’s been a trooper — a strong woman of faith.

I woke up thinking how much I missed him on his special day, but more importantly, I thought about the one that brought him into this world and raised him to be such a fine, godly man….FOR ME! I ran to the store and bought a beautiful lemon meringue pie, and hand-delivered it to Mom with a birthday card for her about “him”, with thanksgiving for the gift of her boy to me. She had slept in a little later and was eating her breakfast at 9:00 am — she hadn’t realized it was the 12th — her boy’s birthday. I could tell it made her day when I showed up to celebrate “her boy” and his life. And, it made my day to see her joy as she thought about him and his love for lemon meringue pie. As I left, we hugged and she said, “Thank you so much. I’ll see you later. Now, I’m going to go talk to my boy and have some pie!”

Yes, quite often, it’s the little things that matter most — that we do to bless others — but the joys of giving boomerang right back and mean the most to us!
