Learning to Lead AND Follow

Learning to Lead AND Follow

September 12, 2024 Off By Donna Wuerch Noble

It all started one Wednesday night at our church’s weekly family dinner. We overheard two couples chatting about their next dance class. We leaned in closer to hear more! Turns out, several couples from our church gather for a meal and then dive into dance classes.

Take that a “dance-step” further – we jumped into the conversation and “the dance”! Most every Monday night, you’ll find my husband and me — yes, us – the oldest couple in the group — taking dance lessons, too! BTW – no mix and mingle here — one partner only!

The couple leading these classes has a love story that makes Hallmark look like amateur hour. They were on the brink of divorce when a counselor suggested they try dance classes to reconnect. And, it worked! Their marriage was restored, and now they’re teaching other couples how to dance — and how to love again.

Their logo says it all: “As 1-ONE Dancing – where two will become one.” And if that doesn’t give you goosebumps, the back of their shirts might. His reads, “DARE to LEAD,” and hers, “TRUST to FOLLOW.”

Isn’t that beautiful? It’s a reminder that a man leads not just in dance but also as a Godly example to his family and others — a leader worth following.

AND, for the rest of us – to TRUST the one(s) who lead us with Godly character and wisdom BUT, most importantly, to trust THE ONE, our Lord Jesus Christ Who is the way – the truth and the life AND, the greatest dance partner of all!

Each of our dance classes begins and ends with prayer. Lord, have mercy! We need that prayer. LOL! We’re learning the two-step and are having so much fun with lots of laughter and learning!

Let’s be real — we won’t be appearing on Dancing with the Stars anytime soon. That’s okay! We’re not in it to win it, but we are learning that life – much like a slow dance and then a high-stepping upbeat dance is oh so sweet when we allow our Lord to lead on the dance floor of life.

He sets the rhythm, and as we trust Him to guide our steps, we find ourselves in the most beautiful love affair of all – following our Leader Who never misses a step!

“Let them praise His name with dancing and make music to Him with timbrel and harp.” Psalm 149:3
