Let’s Find Common Ground
I thought of this song when I watched opposing news commentaries speaking about how divided we are as a Country.
“You’re my brother. You’re my sister. Take me by the hand.
Together we will work until He comes.
There’s no foe that can defeat when we’re walking side by side.
As long as there is love, we will stand.”
True love doesn’t often come easy — especially at times like these when we seem so divided and so much ugliness abounds. During these times, one of the greatest gifts we can offer each other is the grace to listen and the courage to understand. It’s in these moments of genuine connection that we find common ground.
I’d like to offer some solutions for that common ground:
1. Listen with an Open Heart
Listening is an act of love. When we truly listen, we aren’t waiting for our turn to speak or planning our rebuttal. Instead, we are giving the other person the gift of our full attention. This simple act can transform conversations and build bridges of understanding.
2. Find Common Ground
Despite our differences, we share many common goals: a desire for safety, a hope for a better future, and the well-being of our families. By focusing on what unites us rather than what divides us, we can foster a spirit of mutual respect.
3. Speak Words of Kindness
Words have immense power. They can heal or hurt, build up or tear down. In our interactions, let’s choose words that uplift and encourage. A kind word at the right moment can be a beacon of hope in someone’s day.
4. Practice Empathy
Empathy allows us to step into another’s shoes and see the world from their perspective. It’s through empathy that we can understand the fears, hopes, and dreams of those who may see things differently. This understanding is the foundation of true community.
5. Pray for Unity
Prayer is a powerful tool for change. Let’s pray for unity in our communities and our nation. Pray for wisdom for our leaders and for hearts that seek peace and justice. In our prayers, we find the strength to be peacemakers in a divided world.
Yes, these times can be trying. But let’s be the light that shines in the darkness. By listening, finding common ground, speaking kindly, practicing empathy, and praying for unity, we can be a source of hope and encouragement for everyone, regardless of political affiliation.
Common ground? We breathe the same air. We are all God’s children. And we desire peace and unity! I think I’ll start there!
