Not Burdensome, But Joyful
“And His commandments are not burdensome — for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world.” 1 John 5:4
Don’t you love those words? “Not burdensome” and “begotten by God”? That’s you and me — produced by God Himself. Talk about having the best label ever — forget “Made in China” or “Made in the USA.” You and I carry the mark: MADE BY GOD!
Some days, it doesn’t feel that way. On my busiest days, when my to-do list is longer than the CVS receipt, I find myself burdened with tasks. And I may get through them all — but my heart feels half-hearted.
Yet there’s a difference when I shift my gaze. On the days I say, “Okay Lord, I’m Yours — show me what really matters today,” the burden lifts.
The same chores, the same people, the same hours suddenly feel lighter. Joy has a way of sneaking into the cracks when faith opens the door.
That’s the beauty of that verse. God isn’t handing us a set of heavy weights to carry. He’s offering us a way of life that’s fueled by love. And when we walk in His love, we don’t just “survive the day.” We conquer it. We conquer dread and resentment and we “conquer the world”!
Jesus came to “set the oppressed free” (Luke 4:18). That includes the oppression of our own attitudes. His love untangles the knots, gives purpose to the mundane, and replaces sighs with songs.
So the next time life feels like a backpack full of bricks, let’s remember —- we’re begotten by God. We’ve already got His victory stitched into our DNA. So, let’s lay down the grumpiness and pick up His joy, and then let’s walk and talk like the conquerors God made us to be!
God’s commandments aren’t heavy –they’re holy. When we let His love fuel us, the burdens lift and joy takes over. Remember: we’re not just surviving the day — we’re conquering it, because we’ve been produced by God!
