Oops! I Did It Again!
(And, I’m not referring to the Britney Spears version — but MY version.)
Oh, mercy. I did it again. I ranted, rambled, and let my tongue run wild like it had a life of its own. The words came out faster than my good sense could catch them — and once again, I wished I had just idled my engine in neutral a little longer before shifting to drive.
“The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” Proverbs 18:21
I do have thoughts. Lots of them. And opinions? Oh yes, I have a warehouse full. But sometimes I forget that not every thought needs to be spoken out loud — or at least not so quickly or so loudly. Can you relate?
Here’s the truth: unchecked words can do real damage. That’s why listening is a spiritual discipline I’m asking God to grow in me….more. Because while I’m busy crafting the perfect response in my head, I’m missing the heart behind the words someone else is trying to say.
“To answer before listening — that is folly and shame.” Proverbs 18:13
When I speak without thinking, it’s like squeezing out too much toothpaste. I can apologize, I can clean up the mess, but I can’t put those words back in the tube.
But here’s the grace: even when we blow it (again), God doesn’t give up on us. He reminds us gently — and sometimes firmly — that He’s the boss of our mouths. Not our frustration. Not our flesh.
So today, I’m praying this out loud (with the tongue that sometimes needs a leash):
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14
Because I want my words to lift, not crush. To build, not break. To heal, not harm.
If you’ve ever said too much, too soon, too sharply — you’re not alone. But thank God, He’s not finished with us yet.
Let’s choose wisdom. Let’s listen well. And if the words must come out, let them be soaked in grace.
