Our Great Physician
After years of enduring neck and back pain, my precious son, a formidable businessman, golfer, marathon runner, husband and father, acquiesced to having cervical neck and spine surgery on Wednesday. He put the surgery off as long as he could.
Though I have confidence in God’s healing virtues AND the incredible abilities of brilliant surgeons and their teams, I’ll admit this mama had to have a little, rather big talk with Jesus like I did when he was a very sick baby many years ago. Club feet, a hiatal hernia, and tonsils that had to be removed. An 18-year-old mother, ME, knew one thing – our Great Physician was on call the entire time.
When we went to pray with him the night before the surgery, I was boldly confident in this modern-day miracle that would take place the next day. I was working at the election polls when Shawntel called with the good news after a 2-1/2 hours surgery. “The doctor walked out with a big smile and shared that it all went well.” Thanks be to God! With so much gratitude in our hearts, the surgery that went through his throat area was a complete success.
That same, awesome, and loving Father showed up as our Great Physician again. Above all, I am ever grateful that I know my Great Physician is on call 24/7. Oh yes, this mama remembers calling on His name, “Jesus, Jesus” many times as I held my babies and others in my life, including my own self.
Time and again, our Great Physician showed up for us. If anyone tries to convince me otherwise, they’re too late. That “healing” bus left the building a long time ago.
Here’s the thing. I don’t just call upon my Great Physician when I need healing. He and I have a “thing” going on. We personally know each other, and I cultivate that friendship – that companionship — that Father/daughter relationship. I personally know Him. He is my best and most loyal, dependable Lord and Savior. He has bedside manners that assure me of His faithfulness.
I’m not suggesting that we do away with medicine, but I am suggesting that our first “go-to” in times of illness or stress or any other challenge we face….is calling on our Great Physician, our on-call Savior. I just happen to be His “assistant” today and handing over to you some “prescriptions” He gave us from His Word. You’re welcome.

I call on our Great Physician and He answers my call — morning, noon, and night. His reputation is impeccable AND He is always in town, never on vacation and He shows up when we need Him most. May I refer you to Him today?
