Our Hero Never Misses a Rescue

Our Hero Never Misses a Rescue

I’ve always been a sucker for a good hero story. Blame it on my childhood attraction to Superman – first in comic books and then the big screen. Remember the slogan?

“Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Look up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…SUPERMAN!

So, last Saturday night, when we treated a dear friend (who’s often our real-life hero) to dinner and then took him to see the new Superman movie, I was all in.

But I must tell you — this wasn’t the Superman I remember. Sure, he still had Lois on his mind and a flair for dramatic rescues, but this version? There was a whole lot more computer-generated imagery, rage, rubble, and raging metahumans. Buildings falling left and right, and I’m thinking… “Where’s the heart? The hope? The heroism that makes me want to stand up and cheer?”

Truth is – maybe I’ve outgrown my need for a super-hero like the DC ones – especially when we have a Hero who doesn’t need cape drama. He doesn’t tear things down to show His strength. He lifts burdens, not buildings. He doesn’t swoop in with vengeance — He draws near with compassion.

Psalm 46:1 says it best: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

I see heroes all around us. Like my pastor nephews and businesses and many high profile individuals — from far and wide, who dropped everything to serve in the aftermath of the Kerrville floods. The ministries and volunteers who show up when others walk away. The neighbor who brings a casserole without being asked. Everyday heroes.

But Jesus? He’s in a league of His own.

He didn’t just rescue us from trouble — He rescued us from sin, from fear, from the grave. He’s the One who teaches us to love the unlovable, to serve without needing applause, to stand when others run. He doesn’t just save the day — He saves our souls.

So yes, I still love a good superhero story. But the real plot twist? I already know how this story ends. OUR Hero wins!

And even better — He shares the victory with us. No cape. No kryptonite. Just unfailing love, unstoppable power and a crown that never tarnishes!
