Paris – the City of Lights
How fitting that Paris hosts the 2024 Summer Olympics. John 1:5 says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” As I watched the athletes, I saw that light shining brightly.
The opening ceremony was a spectacle of monumental proportions, even as rain poured on athletes navigating the Seine River in boats. This unique approach, unlike any previous ceremonies, didn’t dampen the spirits of the athletes or the crowd. The event was a magnificent testament to human resilience and unity.
Tony Estanguet, President of the Paris Organizing Committee, delivered words that filled me with hope: “To the athletes, tonight you have reminded us how beautiful humanity is when we come together. There is a place where people of every nationality, every culture, and every religion can live together. You’ll be reminding us: it is possible.” His speech resonated deeply, highlighting the universal emotions shared through sport.
I was profoundly moved by the sight of athletes — conscientious, tireless, and ready to compete, embodying unity and determination. But the pinnacle of the evening, the moment that brought tears of gratitude to my eyes, was the finale. Celine Dion, singing “Hymne à l’amour” from the balcony of the Eiffel Tower.
“If the sky should fall into the sea, and the stars fade all around me …” so begins France’s most famous song about love! It was a sight and sound to behold. Despite her battle with a rare progressive neurological disorder, her performance was nothing short of miraculous.
Her powerful performance marked the first time that Celine has sung live since she was diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome in 2022. What an emotional comeback! But look at what God did! He showed the world what a miracle looks like. And God is no respecter of persons! He can do the same for you, too!
The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics was not just an event; it was a celebration of humanity’s best. As we watch the games unfold, let’s remember that the spirit of the Olympics lives in each of us. Let the games begin for the athletes, and for you and me, as we run our race to victory!
