STOP! Don’t Drink the Kool-Aid

STOP! Don’t Drink the Kool-Aid

Maybe you’re too young to recognize that saying, but I remember it well. It refers to “followership” at its worse. It was coined back in 1978 after a delusional guru named Jim Jones led his cult to mass suicide. Over 900 people, including 304 children, killed themselves by drinking from a vat of grape-flavored drink laced with cyanide. This devasting atrocity took place because of lies.

We think “How could people be so gullible as to fall into that kind of trap?” But every day we fall into the traps of Satan’s lies. I recognize his lies when I get a scratchy throat and he tells me I must be getting Covid. I know his lies when I think I’m lonely or my life doesn’t matter. It’s his voice that condemns, speaks fear, doubt and worry. I recognize that dirty, rotten liar. But even more do I KNOW my Lord’s gentle, loving, kind voice and the truths He speaks.

Could we be so blind as to believe the lie that our child or spouse will never come to Jesus? Or the lie that we will never get well? Or the lie that says we are doomed for failure. And words like: “My child will always be a drug addict. My marriage is destined for failure. I will never be able to afford that. I will never be happy. Our Country is going to hell in a handbasket.” If we’re believing those lies, we’re “drinking the Kool-Aid”. Please STOP coming into agreement with Satan’s lies.

I am not in denial. I am living on the side of what God‘s Word says and if He says it, I believe it. If He says I am healed, then I am healed. If He says I am restored, then I am restored. If He says that I will win, then I win. My dear, precious friends, I love you too much to agree with you if you tell me your lies. I will totally love you, but I will not agree with you. You’re too late to convince me otherwise. My baby girl was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. We would not believe the lie. I was destined to be a whiny, broken widow and destined for failure on so many levels, but I would not believe the lie.

Don’t “drink the Kool-Aid” that says if you’re born a certain color that you are less than anyone else or above anyone else. That’s a lie from the pit of hell. No matter whatever color or ethnicity we are, it’s because God ordained us to be that color and race. And I’ll go a step further. If you’re born a man or a woman, don’t believe the lie that you’re NOT who God created you to be. You are beautifully woven together on purpose. The Psalmist declared “For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:13-14)

God’s truths are all about redemption, life worth living and destiny and purpose. The enemy’s lies are about weakness, death and destruction and being less than. God’s truths are found as we align ourselves to what He says we are in His Word. I speak those truths to myself daily. I get a little ache or pain – I say: “Lord, thank you, that my body is lining up with what you paid for at the cross.” 1 Peter 2.24 says “By the stripes of Jesus we are healed.” I believe those words because they are God’s words.

Let’s flip the script on the enemy’s tactics to “kill, steal and destroy us”. Let’s bear down in our faith to trust in THE ONE Who came to give us abundant life (John 10:10). Instead of talking to God about Covid. Speak to Covid about the greatness and the ability of God. That’s what I believe and that’s WHO I trust in with all my heart.
