Sweet & Tasty Treats

Sweet & Tasty Treats

July 18, 2022 Off By Donna Wuerch

I read that Krispy Kreme celebrated its 85th birthday on July 13th. AND, to celebrate, from July 11th through July 14th, they chose multiple guests each day to receive an 85th birthday card worth a dozen free glazed donuts a month for a year.

I’m sorry I missed the big celebration! Well, not really. The good Lord knows this girl could eat a dozen of those sweet, tasty, delectable, warm and close-to-heaven treats! My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Talk about a success story! Vernon Rudolph founded Krispy Kreme on July 13, 1937 in Winston-Salem, NC. He rented a building in Old Salem to make donuts by the dozen and initially he sold them to local grocery stores, but the demand soon led him to sell his sweets directly to customers on the sidewalk through a window.

When I read about the celebration, I had a “blast from the past” moment, thinking about my grandkids (Payton, now age 22, and Alexia, 20) enjoying those yummy donuts. It was a sweet visual of them watching them being made, their eyes sparkling and lips watering, when the store clerk would give them a free one. That was one of Papa’s (my husband) special treat when they visited us – much to their parents’ chagrin. Oh, how those kiddos loved coming to our house – especially since their parents were health and fitness gurus at the time.

And I love this “make believe” Krispy Kreme donuts photo of my young Brennan (now 18) and Great Granny having a Krispy Kreme tea party. This will be a cherished memory forever!

We’ve come a long way since these photos. These were taken from a camera that held film in it. I took that film to a photo lab and they would develop them for me. Now, with our own cell phone cameras, we have instant photos we can reveal on social media or print ourselves!

Whether you have distant memories like the ones I’ve shared here or memories you’re making today — cherish them — celebrate today’s moments so that tomorrow you can be thankful that you “stopped and smelled the roses”…..or, rather you “stopped to enjoy a yummy donut”!

And, oh, that we would savor the sweet and tasty treats that our Heavenly Father provides us from His Word (no calories involved):

“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Psalm 119:10

“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” Psalm 34:8

“More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.” Psalm 19:10
