The Case of the Lost Driver’s License
A few days ago, I was a woman on a mission — a DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) mission.
My sweet friend, recovering from back surgery, needed a new handicap placard – the others had expired.
Easy enough. I headed to the Williamson County DMV, took a number, waited patiently, and voila — mission accomplished! Placard in hand, I delivered them to my friend. Hugs, thanks, and smiles exchanged.
Thirty minutes later: Ring, ring. “Hey… did you give me back my driver’s license?” Gulp!
What followed was a frantic search that could have made for a great episode of CSI: Retirement Edition. I retraced my steps. Looked under her recliner. Searched my car. Called the DMV. Nada.
I even offered to help fill out a “lost license” form. But before I played the role of DMV scribe, I checked my purse one more time. Main compartment — nope. Zipper pocket –wait… what’s this?
Eureka!
There it was — right where my lightning-fast brain had completely forgotten that I had tucked it in that zipper pocket.
Just then, the DMV clerk called me back. “Did you find it?”
“Yes, ma’am — I sure did!”
“We thought so. We checked the security camera and saw you put it in your purse.”
Holy moly! I was caught on camera! Hallelujah for those hidden cameras that we can’t hide from! I was caught on camera by grace.
Yes, I found the license without the camera — but what a relief that the DMV cared enough to help us in our quest!
I laughed out loud. And then I remembered Luke 15. Jesus tells the story of the woman who lost a coin, lit a lamp, swept the house, and searched carefully until she found it. When she did, she told her friends and threw a celebration.
That’s what I’m doing today! I’m telling my friends about my find!
Sometimes we lose things — keys, wallets, cell phones, patience, perspective. But God’s Word reminds us:
“Seek and you will find.” (Matthew 7:7)
Not just lost things — but eternal things. Peace. Wisdom. Direction. Hope — and so much more!
And like that license in my purse, the truth is often closer than we think. God’s presence isn’t far off — it’s near. His answers? Already on the way.
So, let’s keep seeking. Don’t panic — just pivot, pray, and peek in that pocket again! God is always guiding, even when we forget where we put things. Seek and you will find.
