The Competitive Edge
I come from a long line of go-getters… and yet, I was the kid hiding behind my mama’s coat-tails. I wasn’t loud, didn’t play sports, and wouldn’t dare raise my hand unless I was really sure of the answer.
But somehow, God gave me a family full of people who don’t just show up to the game — they show up to win. Board games? Competitive. Fishing? Fierce. Family reunion pickleball? Don’t let the smiles fool you – it is a combat zone to be the big winner!
They love the thrill. Me? I love being the sideline photographer and team cheerleader. Nobody’s elbowing me for that spot, thank you very much.
But recently, I saw a billboard for a Sleep Number mattress that said: “This isn’t your bed — it’s your competitive edge.”
Oh, that slogan preached. Apparently, the NFL partners with Sleep Number to help players sleep smarter so they can perform better. Makes sense. Rest isn’t lazy, it’s preparation.
And that got me thinking.
We’re in a daily battle too. Not for trophies or title belts, but for peace, purpose, and people we love.
John 10:10 tells us the real opponent:
“The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy — but I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.”
That’s our edge right there: Jesus.
He equips us with truth, wisdom, and spiritual muscle through His Word.
The enemy isn’t scared of our family game night win streak — but he is scared of believers who know who they are, whose they are, and what weapon they carry: the Word of God.
So yes, competition can be fun. But in this life, the only real battle worth winning is the one for our faith, our family, and our future.
We’ve already got the winning edge.
Romans 8:31 reminds us: “If God is for us, who can be against us?”
Our real competition isn’t each other — it’s the enemy. But good news: we’ve got the edge, the armor, and the scoreboard already says ‘VICTORY”!!!
