The Power of a Plate
We all have those chipped dishes in the back of the cabinet. In our family, there’s one plate that never gathers dust. It’s the red one that boldly declares: “You Are Special Today.”
This plate isn’t made of fine china. It didn’t cost a fortune. Still, it is pure gold to our family! Why? Because it marks a moment. It celebrates a birthday or a big test. It is a doctor’s appointment or a hard-earned win. It can also be just a day someone needs a little extra love.
Last Sunday, that red plate sat in front of my son Ryan. Though his actual birthday (today) took him out of town, we celebrated early. His smile said it all. We weren’t just eating — we were honoring. That plate announced what we all know to be true: Ryan is deeply loved and profoundly appreciated.

Ryan once shared, “People ask how I manage family, work, marathons, and giving back. The answer? I live with purpose.” And one of those purposes has been building meaningful traditions with his family — like the red plate.
It’s more than a novelty. It’s a confidence builder, a legacy-maker. It teaches children (and yes, grown-ups too) that they matter. It slows us down in our fast-paced, drive-thru lives and says, “Hey, you’re seen. You’re celebrated.”

There’s something sacred about watching the youngest of the four boys. His eyes light up as his older brothers share why he’s special. Or hearing a husband tear up as his kids call out his character and strength.
Romans 12:10 reminds us: “Outdo one another in showing honor.” The red plate helps us do just that.
So, why not start a new tradition? Grab a plate. Write on it, paint it, or simply declare a day. Then watch what happens when intentional love becomes a family legacy.
Happy birthday again, to my beloved Ryan — in whom I am well pleased!
One red plate. A thousand memories. What’s your family’s way of saying, “You are special today”?
