Don’t Believe the Lies

Don’t Believe the Lies

If you’re hearing voices in your head that talk you down – then this blog is for you. We’ve all heard those smack-talk voices that are sent to undermine our very existence and keep us from all that God has destined for us. “You’ll never amount to anything.” “You are too old to do that.” “You’ve outlasted your expiration date!” “You are weak.” “You are afraid.” “Give up. You’re going to fail again.” “Quit now before you make a fool of yourself.” “Give up — there’s no way out!” “You weren’t born into the ‘right’ family.” “You could NEVER be a success — you don’t have the looks for that!” “You’re a loser!” “You’ve tried that before and it didn’t work out — give up!”

If you’ve heard any one of those statements – then here’s the truth – the Gospel truth: They are all lies and they come from the father of lies. Scripture verifies it: “There is no truth in him (the devil). When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 28:7). So if you’re hearing any of those words and statements, just know the opposite is true.

Case in point. This year America’s Got Talent winner, for the first time in the show’s history, was a poet. No acrobatics, no singing voice of a virtuoso, no mouth-dropping dance skills, no stand-up comedian, ventriloquist or magic act. Brandon Leake, an inspired and gifted writer and spoken word poet – won Season 15 of AGT, claiming the $1 million prize, a new car, and a show in Las Vegas. A little history about Brandon – raised by a single mom in his neighborhood ghetto with an abusive home life. Imagine the voices he shut out to be a champion today. After the show, he responded to the question: “How will this help you in your cause against racial injustice?” His response: “First and foremost, as a believer in Christ, I’m compelled to stand on frontlines of social and racial injustice.” His performances and very personal poetry, addressed uplifting and serious topical subjects, like his strained relationship with his father and the power of forgiveness, new baby daughter and the joys of parenthood. Not your usual AGT talent. Brandon took the negative voices of his past and used them as a platform to victory. And we can do that, too!

When I was a kid and another kid was fibbing, we’d chant “Liar, Liar….pants on fire!” Well, it’s time to start saying that to those voices that are lying to you, because you were born with the seeds of greatness in you! You are destined for greatness — you were designed by the Creator to conquer, to win, and be a champion!

Here’s what is truth for you, too. If you are a believer in Christ, there are no limits to what you can do and be. Nothing – absolutely nothing – is impossible with God! (Luke 1:37) Take the limits off. You are a winner and can do all things through Christ Who gives you strength. You are full of courage and boldness and no weapon formed against you will prosper! And, that my friends, is the TRUTH — the GOSPEL TRUTH! And don’t you forget it!
