Let’s Build a Name for Ourselves
The people of Babel had one goal: “Let us build ourselves a tower with its top in the sky, and so make a name for ourselves.” (Genesis 11:4).
They weren’t just building a tower; they were building a legacy of their own making — striving to be remembered by their achievements rather than by who they were. And God, in His wisdom, put an end to it. Not because He’s against ambition, but because He knows that the best way to be remembered isn’t through what we build — it’s through how we live.
Case in point: Here in Cabo, we’re staying in Cabo del Sol, a gorgeous hotel and residential community where it seems like everyone knows each other by name. My children — my son, his wife, their children — and even Carl and me — are members of this community!
And let me tell you, Ryan’s name carries weight here. When we pull up in the golf cart with WUERCH printed on the front, people light up. A simple mention of his name brings instant recognition, warmth, and a smile. Not because he built a tower, but because he built relationships. He is known for his honesty, generosity, friendliness, and that contagious smile that’s usually accompanied by a hug.
That’s how I want to be known.
Not for what I achieve, but for the love I give. Not for what I build, but for how I make people feel. Not for striving to make a name for myself, but for reflecting the name that matters most — God’s.
“A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” (Proverbs 22:1)
He has called us by name.
Kind. Honest. Generous. Faithful. Loving.
We don’t need monuments to be remembered. The greatest legacy we leave is in the lives we touch.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:14)
Lord, let my name be known not for what I build, but for how I love. And above all, let Your name be the one that shines through me.
